DESCRIPTION
Long narrow opal doublet from Coober Pedy, Australia with green wavy flash. An opal doublet is where the top of the stone is natural opal placed onto a backing. About eighty percent of all opal jewelry is made using doublets. The reason is two-fold; placing the opal onto a backing enhances the opal’s color and appearance. The base color that the opal fire resides in is normally clear or milky white. By placing a backing onto the opal, the light bounces back and makes the opal’s colors pop. The second reason jewelers like myself make opal doublets is that often the color band of an opal is so thin, a backing is added for strength before making the opal into a piece of jewelry.
